This book was such a weird mix of spooky, quiet, and surprisingly emotional, and I really loved that about it. It was such a journal-like, almost confessional vibe. About halfway through, there’s this huge story-inside-a-story moment, when a restaurant owner basically stops everything to tell Abe and Dan the entire backstory of the creek. It’s long, and you’re literally listening to a guy tell a story to another guy who’s telling a story to us, but I was hooked. The atmosphere got even thicker, and I just sank right into it. Langan’s writing is dense in a good way; heavy, but super readable. Within just a few pages I felt like I was sitting next to Abe, listening to him ramble through the kind of story that slowly pulls you in without you noticing. Even with all the cosmic-horror weirdness, what stuck with me most was how beautifully the book handles loss, denial, and grief. It’s eerie, introspective, touching, and just a really unique reading experience.
