I hate to give this as low of a rating as I am because the idea and the origin of the story is so cute, and when I heard Brandon Sanderson talk about his thought process, inspiration, and goals behind the book, I think he hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, the result just wasn't for me. I didn't expect that this would veer into pirate story territory, and that the narrator would be a side character in the story (which isn't a dealbreaker, just threw me for a loop and I never got used to it). I wanted to root for Tress and Charlie and their romance, but I just never did. All in all, there just wasn't anything that I loved. I don't want to write an essay, so I'll just finish by saying that this is the first of Brandon Sanderson's works I've ever read. I'm not familiar with the Cosmere lore and can't speak to whether this would be more impactful if I knew more about the universe this is supposed to be from. I'm hoping that after I eventually get around to reading Mistborn, I'll want come back to this just to see if my opinion changes the deeper I get into the Sanderson-verse.
