5⭐️ This book was good and not what I was expecting. I really liked the references on art of all forms, from paintings to theaters, to Lord Henry’s poetic way of talking. The beginning and ending was really good. The middle unfortunately was slow, especially chapter 11. It was just a long chapter (maybe the longest in the book) that described all of Dorian Gray’s obsessions. It was interesting to read about the various Kings and rulers, or the history and myths about each precious stone and gem he collected, it was just very detailed. This might be a re-read for me during the Halloween holidays.

Another classic I added to my TBR - but alas I did not like… I was hoping for league of extraordinary men Dorian, but I got a spoiled whiny rich boy who wanted to be pretty forever - thankfully spoiler alert everybody dies in the end

“Culture and corruption. I have known something of both.” Dialogue-heavy though it was, this story remained action-packed and gripping. And what an ending! Through others’ influence, Dorian Gray is transformed from innocence into a dreadful reality. The picture’s constant changing, reflective of the tainting of Dorian’s soul, is horrific but so fascinating to me. And it leads me to wonder if Dorian truly was a good-hearted individual to start, or if that was only the lens we saw him in through Basil’s admiration. How deep has the poison spread? Lord Henry’s character was frustratingly cynical, misogynistic, and generally unpleasant to read about, and I genuinely believe him to be largely responsible for the events that transpire within this book. The queer undertones of Basil’s character make his eventual murder that much more heartbreaking. Yes, he painted the picture to begin with, but what more fault does he have than that?
