I'm slightly conflicted. I enjoyed this book, but it's not my favorite thing ever. I wish there would've been more at the ending because I really wanted to see how that would go. The ending is when I really started disliking Fern. Like, at the very end I mostly liked her again, but there was a little while where I didn't really like her. I don't know if I'll read anything else by Grady Hendrix, but I did at least enjoy this one. Mostly. I give it 4/5 stars.

*“Our parents say the War is good. The president says the bomb is good. They tell us factories that poison the earth are good. They say drugs are bad, and burning draft cards is bad, and hippies are bad, and everyone who wants to stop the War and save the planet is bad. It’s brainwashing! Everything they say is bad is good, and everything they say is good is bad. So maybe we should stop marching along like a bunch of sheep and start thinking for ourselves.”* What I loved: ✿ black-and-gray morality ✿ message that creating life in itself is magical ✿ male author coming to bat for women everywhere Part of me thinks listening to the audio of this was a mistake as it was very detailed in certain scenes and the narrators voice was jarring at times. There were a lot of lulls for me, far more lulls than intrigue. The author repeated a lot of the main characters inner-monologue and being as young as she is that makes sense, but it drove me crazy at times. I loved the level of empathy shown by the author and his ability to story tell from the perspective of pregnant teens making decisions based on the circumstances they find themselves in. Trigger warnings: Pregnancy, Medical trauma, Blood, Child abuse, Pedophilia, Sexual assault, Rape, Racism, Adult/minor relationship [✿ Connect with me on instagram ✿](https://www.instagram.com/bookbestie_storm?igsh=aTh6eTZ6dGwxMXpy&utm_source=qr)

A horrific, frustrating, but ultimately thought provoking read. Honestly, I expected more witchery in the literal sense of this, but this book leaned heavily into a different kind of magic, that is the inner witch in all of us. There was a longing to reclaim power, and so much was out of these MCs control, it felt incredibly heartbreaking but also relatable even for my own time, considering this takes place in the 70s. I can't imagine being that young and forced into these impossible choices that come with pregnancy, with the weight of society pressure with every decision thats made or has to be made, on top of the fucked up pasts these girls come from. This was not a bad read, it pulled me in enough to finish but there were for sure some parts that made me rage, and the revenge that eventually comes felt anticlimactic. You can’t beg the world to do what you want. You can’t ask it nicely. You must bend it to your will.

Really enjoyed this book, it was less witchy than I was expecting but it was so well written and I loved the little excerpts from the groovy witch guide!
