This book had so much potential an then it went and had the worst ending I have ever read, it’s ruined my whole day. 3 starts because the writing is good and it had me crying at times which always means a good book to me but that ending was absolutely atrocious. Stupidest trope ever that should come with a trigger warning. Edit: bumping it down to 1 star cause I’m actually still fuming

I really really wanted to like this one... but I just never really did. It often felt like it was trying to tackle too much (found family, mental health struggles, disability/neurodivergent representation, an interesting magic system, romance, etc); in my opinion, it never went deep enough into any of these things to be a meaningful exploration worthy of the gravity the book tried to give it. That's not to say I didn't like any of it. In its "trying to do too much," it did feel very unique. The cast of characters was quirky, the inn was interesting and fun, and it was very nice to see as much diversity as we got in this (especially in leading characters). I also enjoyed seeing truly morally gray characters (Clemmie) and how their morality can affect their loved ones. If you're interested in a low-stakes, cozy fantasy, I would 100% recommend giving this one a go. I appreciate it for what it is, but recognize that I was not its ideal reader.

This book was decidedly good. Nothing great, at least for me. It was right on that cusp of enjoyable without blowing me away, which is not a bad thing. Good characters, good writing, deep emotions. The pacing is a little slow, I feel like not very much happens past the first chapter until you get 100 pages in. Although, to be fair, this might just be a thing with cozy fantasy lol. It's not a genre I read a whole lot, so take my words with a grain of salt. This spoils some character relationships but no plot, so read at your own risk. <spoiler>Sera and Luke were just okay. I didn't hate them as a couple, didn't love them as one either. I actually really enjoyed their friendship before it turned romantic, and I loved them as individual characters. They seemed to be exactly what the other needed, in a platonic way at first. I just didn't particularly find their romance interesting, it was a very neutral meh for me. It's not bad or unbelievable, just not interesting to me. Which is honestly a me thing! This author writes character relationships really well. My favorite part was Matilda and Jasmine, I was one thousand times more interested in their romance arc than anything else LOL I think because the idea of two sweet old ladies falling in love and choosing to spend the rest of their lives together is so sweet it will give you a cavity ughh it melted my heart. </spoiler> While this book didn't blow me away, it made me laugh, cry, and develop a serious envy towards the found family. If you're looking for a low-stakes, cozy fantasy with an easy, slow pace and lovable characters? Then this is definitely for you. I would recommend it.
