The Last Letter

Rebecca Yarros

4.74

“The Last Letter is a haunting, heartbreaking and ultimately inspirational love story.“—InTouch Weekly

Beckett,

If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have.

I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride.

My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.

And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.

So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.

Please don’t make her go through it alone.

Ryan

I don’t know how to feel about this. Okay I’ve sat on this for a bit and I’m ready to review. I wanted to like this so bad but I just didn’t. I will say O do love Rebecca Yarros and I think that this was well written (it did make me cry at both the beginning and the end of the book which in 99/100 times that means it’s automatically 5 stars in my eyes.) I however did not like the mmc and this made me discover that lying is a major trigger for me. Especially when the lie lasts for almost the entire book and 7 months into a relationship, I just could not root for them at all. However if this was just a tragedy with no romance at all I think I would have liked it so much more. The fact that it was a romance had me raging at the book for 85% of my read.

It took me a min to fully review this one... I am going to start by saying this IS a good book, but I have some issues with it so I am going to rate this 3.5 and round down to 3. This book feels like it was engineered to wreck me, and yet it didnt. It had some really sweet moments, really pulled on your heartstrings with love and loss, but there was a lot of, I dont even wanna say miscommunication, because it was flat out deceiving of one character, and it was 100% on purpose how much was being held back despite life moving on around them and pretending like that wasnt the case but also constantly reminding you that it was… I think the story was hard enough and emotional enough that some things were absolutely unnecessary to the plot and just added in as extra drama that made it realistic, but complicated in a sense that wasnt really needed for it to be a good story. Dont get me wrong, I love this author and this story is good, I can for sure see “why” she did it the way she did, but the end I felt cheated in the “twist” which seemed like it was just put there to make you cry more. Sometimes stories that are predictable (even if they are unhappy endings) are just as good if not better than adding in a plot twist for the sake of more sadness. The end felt a little forced, it was also really abrupt, like everything was fine and then second to last chapter its just BOOM heres more for you to cry about, some completely random thing that had zero foreshadowing… and we will take 3 pages to mourn it. 🌶️ 2/5

A book hasn't made me cry this hard in a long time. Yarros really knows how to break my heart.
