The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires

Grady Hendrix

4.31

Steel Magnolias meets Dracula in this New York Times best-selling horror novel about a women's book club that must do battle with a mysterious newcomer to their small Southern town. “This funny and fresh take on a classic tale manages to comment on gender roles, racial disparities, and white privilege all while creeping me all the way out. So good.”—Zakiya Dalila Harris, author of The Other Black Girl Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller.

Her husband is a workaholic, her teenage kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she’s always a step behind on her endless to-do list. The only thing keeping her sane is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime. At these meetings they’re as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are about their own families.

One evening after book club, Patricia is viciously attacked by an elderly neighbor, bringing the neighbor's handsome nephew, James Harris, into her life. James is well traveled and well read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in years. But when children on the other side of town go missing, their deaths written off by local police, Patricia has reason to believe James Harris is more of a Bundy than a Brad Pitt.

The real problem? James is a monster of a different kind—and Patricia has already invited him in. Little by little, James will insinuate himself into Patricia’s life and try to take everything she took for granted—including the book club—but she won’t surrender without a fight in this blood-soaked tale of neighborly kindness gone wrong.

Steel Magnolias meets Dracula in this darkly funny Southern gothic horror novel Perfect for fans of horror with social commentary, thriller readers, and book clubs Blends true-crime obsession, supernatural mystery, and feminist themes Join the book club—but don’t invite the wrong neighbor inside.

Set in the suburbs of Charleston during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires follows Patricia Campbell, a housewife whose true escape from domestic life is her neighborhood book club. When a charming new neighbor moves into town, strange disappearances and unsettling events begin to unfold. As Patricia becomes convinced something is terribly wrong, she’s forced to fight not only the monster hiding in plain sight, but also the people who refuse to believe her. This is one of those books that just gets better every time I read it. Grady Hendrix takes what could have been a fun vampire story and layers it with so much more. Beneath the horror is a sharp look at gender roles, race, class, and the ways communities choose comfort over confronting ugly truths. I especially appreciated how the novel acknowledges the South’s painful history without feeling preachy—it weaves those realities into the story in a way that feels thoughtful, intentional, and impactful. As a true crime fan, I also loved how each section opens with a real true crime case. It ties in perfectly with the book club theme and adds another layer of atmosphere before the story even begins. And then there’s the setting. The Southern Gothic atmosphere, the late ’80s into early ‘90s nostalgia, the suffocating suburbia, and the creeping sense that something is wrong all come together so effortlessly. It’s creepy, funny, frustrating, and surprisingly emotional all at once. This is still one of my favorite Grady Hendrix novels and a book I’ll happily recommend over and over again. This author has been an interesting one to me lol not sure how i feel about this one lol it had a really strong start, funny ladies, southern book club, but was a lil slower near the end with a lot of really gross things added in and the men all just were awful... some of the descriptions kinda made me physically recoil. Like gross lol but also well done 👏 i do wish this had more vampire storyline but overall not bad. I would probably not read again but I do like this author so far theres a realness to these stories and the old 90s vibe is always a fun lil blast from the past to read.

Genuinely unable to decide if I liked this read or if I was just morbidly curious enough to see it to the end.

A lot creepier than I thought it was going to be, but it had me hooked from the beginning. I could have done with a bit more backstory on the vampire himself, but I realize there doesn't always need to be a big motive for these guys. He was hungry. 🤷‍♀️Loved Patricia and the book club!
